Adryan tapped his fingers impatiently against the wooden edge of his desk as he stared avidly at the clock. The second hand ticked on painfully slow as the minute hand seemed to refuse to move at all. He knew he should be paying attention to what was being assigned for homework, but he just didn’t care to be honest- not at that moment. His head had been practically waterlogged with thoughts over the past few days and he was feeling like another library trip was in order. However he would not be returning for the same reason as he had on that fateful morning. No, lately it was bothering him that he had so little control over his element and his classes weren’t exactly helping with that. Both of his parents could do it effortlessly, but the trait had just seemed to skip him. In fact he hardly harbored any power at all, unless threatened. His fingers continued to do their impatient dance as his eyes remained glued to the clock on the wall above the chalkboard. He perked up as he watched the minute hand tick forward closer to the end of class hour. His fingers stopped tapping and so did his blinking. Another minute passed and he angled himself with his hand on his messenger school bag, ready to book it the minute the bell sounded. Tick, one more minute to go. Adryan tapped his foot all the more impatiently as he held his breath against irritation while he watched the second hand make its last round around the clock.
The bell rang more than satisfactorily as Adryan slung the strap to his bag over his shoulder and was out of the classroom faster than anyone else. He received odd looks for it too, but he wasn’t about to pay that any attention- he had places to go. While fighting the thick throng of student in the hallways, Adryan let his mind wander once again. It had so suddenly become so important that he get a grasp on his element. In fact he’d never had so much motivation to do so in his life until now. It was strange really but at least he now understand why- at least a little bit more than he had before. All thanks to him, he thought with a melancholic mental tone. Really he should thank his newest friend, for that’s what he was to him even if the boy didn’t quite think so- he really didn’t know. It was hard to make such an impression on Adryan but this one certainly had. He doubted anyone else could top such a meeting, he thought with a chuckle at the odd moment that had acquainted the male to Adryan. Alas, life was full of surprises.
Entering the library, the sixteen year old harpy made a beeline for the back of the room where he knew the books he sought out would be. He liked to remain in the back of library as that was where all the educational books were contained, which meant that he would hardly be bothered by another soul. Silently he set his bag down on a circular table hidden narrowly behind a large section of bookshelves. He took off his black jacket as well and laid it over the back of an empty chair- leaving himself clad in a thin white button up shirt and gray jeans. Stretching before beginning his research, Adryan scanned the titles looking for things such as “wind element” or “harpy talents”, anything that would really give him an in depth description on his nature. Oddly enough he hardly knew that side of his being as he had always kept quietly to himself in his human disguise. His parents hadn’t much tried to explain things to him either.
Rolling his eyes at the irony of the situation, Adryan put his hands on his hips and squinted at a narrow book hidden between two monstrous tomes. It read “Wind-Based Races”. Shrugging and thinking that it was worth a short, Adryan wiggled and pulled the book free so that he could flip through the index. The content titles seemed relative to what he was looking for, so with a light expression he opened to a random page and started backing up towards his solitary table. However he didn’t get very far as a few inattentive backwards steps had him walking smack-dab right into someone else. His eyes widened as he furtively turned on his heal- his apologies already tumbling off of his tongue.
“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking!”
