Despite all odds she made it here, at Akashibai Academy. So far everyone seemed indifferent towards her. Treating her as if she had invaded their territory. It was something that confused Piper, who only wanted to be friends with everyone. She had decided to do something on her own and she was not going to let a few mean glares get to her.
But why is it so cold out here?
It seemed cruel to stick herself into the mountains; the coldest part of Denver; where she constantly felt tired and weaker than usual. She pulled her yellow scarf around her face. It seemed to be to large for her small body but she did not care, instead she merely covered over half her face leaving only her eyes to peer out over it, taking in the book she had chosen from one of the shelves in the library. So far she wasn't sure what she was reading, apparently it was about a girl who watched her parents die and for some reason this gave her supernatural powers.. At this point she forced herself to stop reading it because it turned her stomach over.
Piper closed the paper-back novel, allowing it to drop onto the table in front of her. She sighed loudly, shivering in all her many layers of clothing. It was one thing to be able to warm someone up with just a touch of her hand, but for some reason she could not do the same for herself, making her feel utter useless.
Her vocabulary had an extreme increase recently. Her parents never allowed her to read books, at least not human-made books, but in the few years she spent being tossed around houses by the city she started reading numerous books. Somewhere in the room she heard a clock chime that it was a new hour and Piper wondered longingly if things would ever pick up for her..
More importantly would she ever meet another Gargoyle? The thought had passed through her mind numerous times, she wondered if there were any more of them left or maybe the poachers had destroyed them all by now...
Her eyes clouded at this thought. If this were true then she really was alone.[/style] | [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:100px; height:100px; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:75px; height:75px; opacity:0.7; -moz-opacity:0.7; -webkit-opacity:0.7; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:50px; height:50px; opacity:0.4; -moz-opacity:0.4; -webkit-opacity:0.4; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] | [style=font-size:8px; font-family:georgia; color:#000000; text-align:center; margin-top:-10px;]created by shiki @ ote[/style] |

Not that he didn't spend a lo of his time here, when he wasn't following Adalia around to keep her out of trouble.
He entered the library just as the bell chimed in the new hour. He stretched as he entered. It had been a pretty lazy day so far. Of course, he had had some work but nothing major.
His ears picked up the sound of water moving around in his water bottle in his bag. Having it so close was a nice comfort. It always felt better with water around him, though he wasn't about to spend an entire day out in the pond, although he figured that could be a good place to put in some fin work.
When was the last time he had swam? He couldn't even really remember.
Regardless, he went to the shelf he had recently taken to and took out a small book with an old leathery cover. This had been the next book he wanted to read. With the book in hand, he looked for an open area to sit and read.
His eyes rested on a small figure sitting alone. She was bundled up as if it were freezing in the library, but it wasn't. Destan would be one of the first to recognize if it were. His natural conclusion was she was used to hotter weather, maybe an affinity for fire?
He didn't ponder much on the small girl.
Destan took a seat a table away from the small figure. He set his bag against the leg of his chair and pulled out his water bottle. He took a quick drink before turning his attention to the small book in front of him.
It was a small account of a massacre of some sorts. It was a first account of an attack by humans on some small group of monsters with a strong tie to the earth. Apparently, the two sides were evenly matched but humans were resourceful, they found the towns weakness then laid waste. None were left alive, save the one who wrote this down.
Humans could be brutal but then again, so can anyone or anything. Cruelty is just another fuzzy area that is in the eyes of the beholder. What one could consider a heartless crime could very well be a crime of trying to protect something dear.
Destan got through a couple of pages before closing the book. The writer obviously didn't want the reader to walk away from this without throwing up their last meal. The details were unbelievable.
He momentarily wondered why they would have such a book here when they wanted nothing but peace with humans. Then again, one should forgive but to forget would be a stupid thing to do. It's when you forget that you allow them the chance to remind you. And not always pleasantly...

He seemed older than she, at least by a few years. He had blue hair and brown eyes and seemed to resonate with the element water, which was dangerous to her, being a Gargoyle who abhorred water and anything having to do with it. Mainly because it terrified her.
Water. She remember briefly how it shines in the light, no matter day or night, and always has a peaceful air to it but Piper could see straight through that. She knew what would happen if she touched it. Maybe she wouldn't die, but she would if it were cold enough. To her, water was evil and she couldn't help it.
She allowed her gaze to follow him, noting that he gave her a fleeting stare before turning his attention elsewhere. For that brief second she could see something in the element she had feared her entire life that she had never seen before; gentleness.
He had some book in his hand and began to read it and before Piper even knew why, she had cleared the distance between him and her and stood stock still, still as a statue.
Her eyes did not even blink as she stared the boy down, noting every movement he made seemed to flow like water and Piper wondered..
Why? What is he?
She wondered if it was as apparent to him that her element was a complete opposite of his? That the first few Gargoyles had been forged in hell itself, the birthplace of every flame? Her eyes moved momentarily and she realized what she was doing, staring the boy down as if she might attack him, and why?
Because he scared her.
Like a fifty pound weight hitting her in the face, she realized that this was no better than what the humans had done to her species. What the humans had done to her.
Hot tears welled up in her eyes and poured down her cheeks that were now rosy in color,
"I-I-I am sorry!!" She bowed multiple times, looking up at the sitting figure through thick eyelashes, wondering if he would rise and smack her. Such an act in any of her foster homes would of resulted in a beating. How intolerable she had acted!!
And just as she had many times before she would stand her ground and take it. Not like it hurt anyways. Her skin was as hard as stone. At first he just continued to read. He wondered if the girl would leave on her own but after a few awkward seconds he looked up. There was no malice in his eyes when his brown "dusty" eyes met hers. Her look wasn't so friendly.
He wondered if it was a species grudge? Maybe she could sense in him what he could sense in her, an opposite and an enemy. As a merman, fire was not his friend but he had been at the Academy for a little bit and beginning around others who were different from him put him more at ease with those that would naturally be considered enemies.
Which is why even with the death glare, he kept a light smile on his face with a curious glint in his eyes.
He recognized a surprised glint in her eyes like she sensed what she had been doing. What surprised him were the tears that welled up in her eyes. She went from fierce and fiery to adorable and teary-eyed.
It actually caused the smile on his face to fade. Instead it melted into a look of confusion and concern. He moved to stand and asked "Are you okay?"
That was when she started bowing in apology. He stood and waved his hand as if brushing away her apology. "There's nothing to apologize for."
He looked away for a second. "Uh..." He put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief his mother had given him for when he was on shore. He offered it to the crying girl with a faint blush of pink in his cheeks. "Here, you can use this."

Willow had been looking through the school, they still had no room for her so she had been sleeping outside in a sleeping bag and showering in the girl's section of the dorms. Tired from not having a good rest and coughing in her left palm she sat down. Looking in her hand she saw blood but simply dismissed it as a sinus infection. She wiped her left hand on her pants, thinking it was nothing to worry about. She saw Destan and blinked, seeing a girl near him. She seemed upset somehow, her eyes were watery. Maybe she had been hurt by Destan. Was he like that?
People had different sides to them that they kept from others. In this way they were two faced. She sunk in her seat, curious of the events. Unsure on what to do she became more and more curious. A bit too shy to encroach upon the situation and not wanting to seem stalkerish towards Destan she just hung her head. Her hair was in bows today and her electric blue eyes seemed filled with a sort of bored feeling.
Willow got up and sighed then took in a breath of courage. She tried to hold it in her, yet failed. As she began walking closer to the two she turned her back to Destan's and looked through the books in that shelf behind him. She looked like she was doing something sneaky and shifty, like she always did when she felt like she could get in trouble.
She hoped Destan wouldn't be mad. She began to notice there were a lot of books of monsters of various kinds and they weren't under fantasy. Some famous monsters even had biographies. Suddenly she was feeling like she was in a school for crazy people. The words he spoke to her only seemed to worsen her current mood, causing more tears to fall from her large eyes and falling onto her yellow scarf. He was being nice to her. Why? Shouldn't he of struck her? Shouldn't he of embarrassed her to a point of no return? Her astonishment had caused her to drop her defenses. The surprise of his action, his simple act of kindness of handing her a handkerchief, had rendered her speechless.
She was so shocked that her skin had started to change, starting at the rosy color in her cheeks and onward throughout her body, into the gray color that marked her as a gargoyle. She was even unaware of this change. That previously her skin was as white as any human girls should be, but now it was a light grey color. The color of stone.
As her hand came up to take his offering she noticed the change and yelped in panic. Her eyes took in the entire room and she realized that they had become the topic of discussion for numerous other parties in the room. She stepped back, unsure what to do, and then she steadied her breath and told herself that things were different now. Surely such a slip up would not be a cause for her being ostracized, not here. Not where everyone who entered the halls had a small quirk about them. Something that made them different from humans or normal humans. But as she she steadied her breathing, dread overfilled her.
No one will like me now...
Her skin gradually faded back to a normal color as she clutched the handkerchief in her hand she brought it to her face and blotted it, drying her eyes and then holding it out to the other boy with a smile,
"E-excuse me. I am being rude, aren't I?" She laughed nervously, her voice still nasally from her tears.
Piper felt a bit better about herself. She had given her secret away--to other supernaturals, mind you-- and she stood her ground. It was a step towards the right direction and maybe, eventually, she would be able to embrace what she was and not shun it away. He already felt the eyes of those around them. He heard one whisper to another, not really quietly, "Hey did that dude just reject her? That's heartless, she's so cute."
He felt himself turn a bit red at that and cleared his throat to keep from saying anything or running away from the situation. When her tears intensified he was at a lose what to do. Was he the reason she was crying? Had he done something to her without realizing it?
It was then he saw her skin take the hue of stone. He was mystified. Destan had never seen anything like this before. He wondered what she could be that had stony skin; golem, faery, gargoyle or even a nymph. That did slightly explain why she had glared daggers at him.
When she moved to take his offering she caught the sight of her skin tone and Destan could see the panic in her eyes, the fear. He just grew more concerned for the girl. Where ever she was from, she probably hadn't received a warm welcome. When she collected herself enough for her skin to take it's normal tone, he allowed himself to relax slightly.
Her laugh made him give a small smile but there was still concern in his brown eyes. "Don't worry about it." His tone was somewhat softer than his usual one. He had a weak spot for adorable girls, though he wasn't about to say so aloud.
Destan took back his handkerchief and returned it to his pocket. Before allowing a more at ease smile cross his face. He saw that the crowd was starting to disperse now that there didn't seem to be as much drama as they had thought. He thought he felt someone's gaze on his back but he brushed it off as him being overly paranoid.
"Are you going to be okay?" He waited for her response with his book sitting neglected on the table and his water bottle close at hand. He wasn't weird-ed out at all at her chameleon trick, mostly every student was doing something similar and not everyone is a master at hiding their true face.

Concerned.. This guy that moments before she felt hatred blossoming inside her for. She wanted to hate someone she had not even known. Did not even know his name. What was this? She had never experienced such a feeling before and now.. She was left feeling sheepish. It seemed almost instinctual that she hate him but she had never hated anyone. Not even the humans that wanted her species dead.
She looked up to him, him being a bit taller than her. She blushed again when she remembered what her mother would tell her about men. About how they might seek her out one day to become theirs but she must never allow this. Her mother fervently believed that their species were still surviving, somewhere. Because of this, Piper should marry another gargoyle.
And anyways, the nice man in front of her was much older than she. She was only eleven, but due to the Gargoyle's short life span, she looked older than eleven year old human girls her age. She had the appearance of a fifteen or sixteen year old, although one might could see the innocence of a child in her eyes.
Once he had retrieved the small piece of fabric from her hands, Piper looked back up to him, smiling softly and bowing again.
"Oh, yes I will be fine. This was about as strange to me as it probably was to you. This is the first time I have been around other species. Maybe my reaction was some sort of instinct. As terrible as that may sound..."
Her eyes fell to the floor, another reason to despise what I am...
"I am Piper, by the way. I am a new student here, I am a...." She hesitated, not use to telling other's what she really was, "A gargoyle."[/style] | [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:100px; height:100px; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:75px; height:75px; opacity:0.7; -moz-opacity:0.7; -webkit-opacity:0.7; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] [style=border:#000000 solid 5px; width:50px; height:50px; opacity:0.4; -moz-opacity:0.4; -webkit-opacity:0.4; background-image:url(http://i.imgur.com/DsMBF.jpg)] [/style] | [style=font-size:8px; font-family:georgia; color:#000000; text-align:center; margin-top:-10px;]created by shiki @ ote[/style] |

Whatever the problem had been, she seemed to have gotten through it. Thank goodness for that! He wasn't sure how long he could have stood there trying to figure out what to do.
With his handkerchief in his hand, he focused in on her actions and words. Her bowing wasn't too odd to him, merfolk did that sometimes. He returned the bow with one of his own returning her smile.
He was glad to hear that she would be fine, and he was not at all surprised when she explained that her actions were dictated by her species instincts. he had to battle his own instincts to drown humans and hate everything that would hurt or could hurt his own species.
Time and being in this school had definitely helped temper that. He felt that. it would do the same for her if she gave it enough time, of course.
"Don't worry about it, we all have to battle with our better natures sometimes. It comes with what we are. It's nice to meet you, Piper."
He stuck out his hand for her to shake, as a sign of good faith. "I'm Destan and I am a merman. And it's good that you're okay now. I would really hate if you were to hate me."
In truth, he really would have been. This girl was definitely a good person. It was rare to see a gargoyle too. From his readings he had seen that not many exist anymore. If only things could be different for humans and other species but no use dwelling on that now. What has been done can't be changed.
What can change is the future, and Destan knew that he had helped just a little by offering this gargoyle, a being to be hated by his kind and him to hers, not only his hand but his friendship and his trust.
He doubted that Piper understood what this small action meant to him but with her acceptance of him, maybe she in turn can accept someone else who would naturally be considered an enemy?
One could definitely hope, which was exactly what Destan planned on doing.
