Xavier turned to the others as the sounds echoed across the deserted expanse and bounced between concrete buildings. If any of them had thought that the worst was over, well that moment had just become a reality check. Checking to see what weapons were left he gave a simple nod to the rest, signalling them to be ready for another attack. If Atlantis was going down, it was going to go down with one bloody, hellish show.
Adryan narrowed his eyes as the next lines in his book were glared by the ever-annoying sun. He'd been trying to read the same paragraph of his book for the past ten minutes and even though he'd read it about fifty times before- he was still trying avidly to block out the sun. No matter whichever way he angled the book the sun's high, penetrating position continued to beat down on everything. He could feel the heat of the rays on the exposed part of his neck, his back as the black jacket attracted the heat, and even on his hands as he held the book to eye level. Another five minutes passed but to no avail when finally the young blonde boy decided to give up. As his mother had often said, who reads on a beautiful day? Adryan pointed at himself in response to his thoughts as he dropped his book by his side and leaned back on his hands in the grass- wiggling his fingers around in the small green forest. No matter how many times he'd played with the grass throughout his life, the sensation could never be fully satisfied. Now there was a thought that completely identified the harpy- never fully satisfied.
At the moment the one thing that wasn't being satisfied was his energy levels. About a year ago his parents had learned a way to curb his mischievous tendencies by making him run off the energy. While it wasn't exactly his ideal way to get rid of the pent-up energy, it worked. Running, in his opinion, was just another way to be introspective- especially if there was no one to run with. Up until coming to this school, solitary running was his only option. Now that he was here, Adryan hoped he could join some sort of track team or perhaps find an athletic buddy. At least to keep him out of trouble- for the most part anyways. Continuing to lean back on his hands Adryan uncrossed his legs and stretched them out, crossing the ankles together. It really was a nice day and for whatever reason he wasn't being able to fully enjoy it. It always seemed like there was something missing in these peaceful days.
Shrugging, the sixteen year old male decided to make the best of it and closed his eyes against the penetrating sun. Like the old saying went, if you can't beat 'em join 'em. Well Mr. Sun, he thought to himself, give me your best shot. However "best shot" wasn't exactly what he was expecting when he got it as a few moments later had something colliding with his back and making them both roll.

Lazy afternoons usually were great times for studying or doing something amusing to say the least. It was just one of those days that nothing seemed to be fun, only boring. The young female found herself walking out to the soccer field for some time to enjoy the grass and the fresh air. The young female student went by Rosalie, and was very quiet when it came down to actually interacting with her fellow students. Rosie didn’t make friends easily just because she was so use to being on her own with just her siblings to talk to. It was the poor effect on home schooling socialization was bad. She wore her hair up in two pig tails as it was bothering her a little this day. It was after school time was over with and she had her books and bag close by her just in case she decided to do a little homework. Really, she would end up at some point actually doing her homework. She laid back against the grass feeling the softness against her pale skin. This day was a few days that she became a student of the academy and was already missing her old life again, at the same time though she was looking for a new adventure away from her siblings and her parents.
Rosalie pulled out a book and opened it up as she rolled over onto her stomach and started to read the pages of it. It was actually one of her favorite books she had since she was a young girl living in Hawai’i. The weather in Colorado was different than Greece or Hawai’i for the nymph she was use to warm weather. Though, mountain wise this weather was actually perfect for her to enjoy the outdoors as the sun was high in the sky. The book she was reading made her realize the place it took place in was kind of the same setting she was in now, granted there was a few differences. She was in the U.S. and the book took place in a Utopian society based somewhere in the world. That and there was a climate control, where here the climate could be freezing cold or really hot. She sighed a little getting lost inside the book and her own mind rather. As she turned the pages her mind seemed to slowly come back to earth as she was almost finished with her book. The book she was reading was called the giver and she always felt like she could relate almost to the main character of the book and his quest to make it out of the Utopian Society with a baby that was a twin and was going to be killed. Being not normal any one in Rosie’s mind could relate this this book.
When she came back to reality Rosalie decided that she needed to start on some sort of homework before heading to her dorm for the night. She pulled out a notebook and another book and started writing down her thoughts into it. She looked up seeing a boy was on the field with her reading his own book. She was curious to what he was reading. She stood up walking over to him and sitting about 5 feet away from him. She examined his book curious to what he was reading. “hi…” she said really really quiet towards the boy.

Adryan scowled as he looked around for the object (or culprit) that had unseated him from his grassy spot. Yet everything around him was just as normal as ever. In fact it was almost too innocent looking. Having heard the rumors about certain creatures and enchantments that resided throughout the school, Adryan settled back down with a warning glare to anything that had collided with him. Typically he was very mellow tempered, but when provoked unexpectedly- well.. Picking back up his book and turning to the page he'd given up on previously, Adryan continued on with the story engraved into his memory. He knew the tale of Atlantis the way his favorite author described so well that he could probably give an oral presentation reciting the whole thing. Adryan smirked as he thought about such a thing ever being allowed.
For several minutes longer he read on until the chapter ended with the sinking of the island and placed the book down on the grass once more. By now he had brought his knees to rest against his chest and drew his arms around them too. His chin rested somewhat comfortably in between his knees- his eyes closing instantly against the warm air. He loved everything about Colorado, especially the mountain regions. It was like being in one of his books, hidden away in the mountains like they were. However is thoughts ended shortly when a very soft voice spoke from behind him. Had he been human he might not have heard the small voice that carried in the wind. Adryan looked over his shoulder and saw that a girl around his age was sitting a several feet away. She looked so innocent and sweet that it took him back for a minute. In his short experience here at the academy, he had learned that everyone was not as they seemed.
"Um, hey?" He said back and moved about two feet closer to the girl on his knees. It was odd if anyone approached him without wanting to know if he'd chosen a gender yet. For years his parents speculated that his harpy heritage is what gave him a soft feminine appearance. Although the theory did make perfect sense, it just didn't go very far to soothing the teasing.
"Do you um, can I help you with something?" He offered uncertainly while rubbing the back of his neck. She seemed harmless enough, but then again dynamite came in very small packages.

Rosalie was still caught up in her book to really know if anything was going on. Most students just walked over her just because she wasn’t vicious or crazy like them. She came to the school to control her water abilities that seemed to always be exploding on her. Like literally water would fly all over the place just because she had no way of controlling them. She bit her lip not sure if she should put down the book or continue on. When she did and she was over near the boy she kept examining his book. It was so familiar to her, she didn’t know why either just one of those things she figured. It was at an instant Rosie figured out what the other boy was reading. It was the story of Atlantis; she read the book when she was little and to every detail she would always made her older brother read it too. She smiled a little as she inched closer to him; all she really wanted to do is she what part he was at. She didn’t mean to be all stalker on him but she really was interested in more of the book than him.
Rosie was a strange little nymph; she was typically random and loud when she was around someone she knew. It was at the point the boy moved closer to her and said hey. She blushed a little as she felt embarrassed that she started a little conversation with him. Well kind of a conversation it wasn’t much but a few words of exchange. She bit her lip when he spoke about wanting something, and that’s when it happened no words could come out of her mouth other than a little giggle. She couldn’t think of how to say she more interested in his book than him. “Um..” She said with a smile on her face. “Actually are you reading the story of Atlantis? Because that is one of my favorite books.” She said actually making a full sentence out of just one little giggle. She could warm up to her fellow student once she decided they wouldn’t be a threat to her. This boy didn’t seem as much of a threat as most students at the school were. She just hoped that he didn’t think of her as weird…well weirder than what she was. She bit her lip not sure how to react to this boy at this moment. She could tell that he was in a higher class just wasn’t sure what class he was in.
“I am Rosalie… Sorry I am not much of a harm but was curious about your book.” She said feeling that if she just said why she was over there maybe he would just let it go. Well, most students would but she didn’t really know the school that well to say this boy was any different. She started to fiddle with her black hair waiting for a new response from him.

Sitting there perfectly poised on his knees, Adryan titled his head slightly to the left as he awaited her response. This simple action often had his mother musing that her son looked more like a cat than the mischievous harpy he was. She seemed so shy, more than he was in fact and oddly enough that made his personality switch from the timid boy to the outgoing type that he could be when provoked. She wasn't exactly provoking him but her shyness was so familiar to his own that it sort of made him feel a kind of connection. Like when young and new students formed packs together against the "scary" older students. Except in this case it was her shyness that made him feel that bond; however small and brief it may be.
She seemed to struggle with wanting to answer him and when her response finally did come out in the wave of a giggle, Adryan rose his elegant eyebrows and smiled. So it was his book that she'd noticed. Reaching behind himself for the paperback, worn pages Adryan held it out for her to examine, "Yeah it is. One would think that with the sort of book collection I have I wouldn't keep reading this one but, it has a special quality for me." He explained while looking down at the cover affectionately. It was a picture of a black haired boy looking into the distance at a mass of ruins. Of course most people could look at the book and know instantly that it was actually a picture of the ruins in Greece, but Adryan saw Atlantis.
"That's good," he said in response to her saying that she wasn't much harm, "because I'm not much of a fighter. I'm Adryan by the way." He offered her his name as well along with an unpracticed smile. It wasn't often that he spoke to other people in the school and even less often with this many words being said. As a shy, introverted child he often struggled with the part of himself that craved other connections. It seemed like he denied so much of his harpy side, he almost felt bad for not giving in to it. He had his reason however. Watching her examine the book, Adryan took the time to quietly observe her. She was small and what a lot would consider cute. He couldn't exactly place any sort of class or race, but then again who could with how the majority of the students stayed in their human forms. Yet her shy behavior made him think that she wasn't all that high ranking anyway. The higher classes seemed to hold a high opinion of themselves that was hard for anyone to miss. Perhaps she was somewhere in the middle like him. Wherever she stood, for some reason Adryan didn't want the conversation to die now that he'd been approached by someone, even if it was for his book.
"So um, do you like reading?" He asked lamely, unsure of what he should say to continue a conversation. Questions seemed like a safe bet though.
