but then he'd stumbled upon this clearing. shaded from the sun by leafy tree-tops. a large root protruding from the ground here and there, forming what could be used as seats. the grass was green, where it could be seen through the wildflowers that seemed to fill the area. or he guessed they were wildflowers. he didn't know much about that kind of thing. but they weren't crushed when he stepped on them...
he was currently sitting on one of the large protruding roots. a zippo lighter in hand. he was flipping the top open and closed, had been for at least a minute now. his eyes were focused on the lighter, so much so that he wasn't paying attention to anything else around him.
but he was getting bored with this. it wasn't calming enough for him. he felt tense. so he lit the lighter and, after making the flame grow a bit, pulled the fire into his palm and put the lighter away. he played with the fire after that, changing it's size and altering it's shape. he used it to form words in the air just in front of him, spelling out his name, his nicknames, and the names of his brother and cousins.
the flame morphed and twisted, changing from letters to a sphere to ca cube. when he felt completely calm again, he let the flame rest in his palm again, reverting back into it's natural shape. the flaming sphere flickered in his hand before he closed his fist and put it out.
he'd have to remember this place. maybe come here whenever he had a strong desire to be alone. maybe no one would find this little clearing. maybe it would be his little secret sanctuary. a place where he could relax and play with a flame, no worrying about anyone bothering him. and the canopy of leaves above him was thick, it didn't look like much rain would get through it no matter how hard it poured. that would make this place even more special for him.
for now, though, he had to head back to the dorms. of just a school building, it didn't really matter which one. why? the sky had gotten dark. he hadn't realized it at first, but after stepping out of the forbidden forest it was made obvious. it was still darkening, actually. though... it didn't look like stormy darkening.
masashi was about halfway to the dorms, near hisakata pond (a little too close, even, considering his distaste for water), when he finally stopped. his brows furrowed as he looked up, golden eyes looking a little dark in the light. the barrier that protected the school was darkening, casting an eary sort of glow. he knew that the teachers weren't around right now, they'd gone off to help the people in town. so what was going on then?
only one thing came to mind. only one answer jumped to the forefront of his thoughts. trouble. something bad was going on. or, rather, something bad had happened. how bad, he had no clue. what kinda trouble it would be, he couldn't say. he just knew it wasn't good. he could feel it. Valus had made his way back to the school on a journey to grab something of importance to him and him alone.
He wasn't even supposed to be here but he was useless with out his Blades soul as it was. He coughed a bit as he was walking around the school trying to get a clue until he saw a student being out.
Valus was also back for another reason... The students..
The Students meant a lot to Valus and he was willing to go back on Roxi's orders to make sure there were no problems.
He saw the student looking almost dead at him as he put his hands in his pocket
"You shouldn't be out kiddo."
He said with an almost sarcastic tone to try to make it a joke. But he was eventually going to ask aquestion that would be answered with utmost truth.. But that was for a different time when he figured out who it was.
The pond was the best place for anything for Valus, he could figure out where his blade's soul would be and how to get it back. He looked around for what clues he could gather while the student may come up with some rhetorical remark that teachers shouldn't even be here.

none of the possibilities that he came up with were very good. not with the teachers gone, off helping the townsfolk beyond the borders. not with Roxanne, the headmistress of the school, gone off with them. what had happened to the boundary? nothing good, surly. not with the way it was currently looking. could they get back inside of the schools' grounds? he doubted it.
whatever had transpired, he had a feeling those behind it were trying to keep the adults out. keep them away until whatever plan came to fruition. so, then, could the students get out? the boundary was created to allow only those who attended or helped run the school access. so was it's purpose reconfigured completely? was it to keep the teachers out and the students in? he'd have to test that theory sometime soon.
but first things first. he had to get away from someone. someone that, by all accounts, shouldn't have been on school grounds. a teacher, that masashi only recognized in passing, was standing not far off in front of him.
the dark headed teenager let his golden gaze fall on the teacher for a moment, hands in the pocket of his hoodie. one hand fumbled with the lighter he always carried, debating whether this could be some kind of trap. after all, adults weren't supposed to be around right now. but here one was and, though he kept a tight grip on the lighter, he decided there probably wasn't anything to be too suspicious of.
and the sarcastic attempt at a joke definitely helped to alleviate any suspicions that remained. well, that and leave a bitter taste in the pyro's mouth. sarcastic or not, he was being called a kid. and, in a somewhat roundabout way, being told what to do. from someone that wasn't even supposed to be here.
"you've got a lot of room to talk there teach. shouldn't you be off helping the townsfolk?"
he was more than tempted to say something rude but he held his tongue. there was no need to go and get into too much trouble. not that much could be done, really. this guy was the only teacher on campus, supposedly, and masashi didn't really plan to just play nice and do as told. no, he had too much of a curiosity on what was going down around this place. he was set on figuring it out. even if it meant sneaking out a window or generally just being a jerk. Valus shook his head at the students attempt at sarcasm.
But it gave him a laugh. Through his laughter he opened his mouth saying.
"Well, someones gotta look after some of the students. What the Head doesn't know won't hurt her for the most part will it?"
He put his hands into his pockets as he looked around the pond. He kept asking questions to himself in his head about his own personal mission. With out his own blade's strength, he was next to useless in Close Combat with the blade and would need to revert to Hand-to-hand. He turned his back to the student and took a few steps forward.
"Well, right now Roxi and the other's don't need me at this moment so I have some breathing room."
He closed his eyes briefly to listen to the area and the wind to see if he could catch the spirit that he needed and that he could see, but for this it was nothing. Almost like finding a needle in a hay stack in this place. With Spirits being almost everywhere.
He opened his eyes and looked up in the Sky, the Barrier was still fading, slowly but surely and he was not liking it one bit. If he had to he would stay at the school to defend the students even if it meant defying the head.
He turned back to the student and smiled slightly as he started to speak.
"Well, then.. Since your out and about what's your game plan?"
He said to try to get some information out of the kid while trying to focus on his own search. Valus didn't play by the rules and neither does this kid.
Maybe if he asked nicely enough Valus would let him in on it all.

Michio was just taking his usual stroll around the Academy like he had been doing every day since he and his brother arrived. Speaking of which, he hasn't seen him ever since they got here. He saw him at the ceremony but then he wondered off after. He wanted to go after him but he decided to let him do what he usually does. He stopped by the lake to take a rest because he had been walking about about an hour and a half which isn't bad for him but his feet were beginning to get sore so he sat by the edge of the pond.
He liked to come around here because he loved water unlike Masashi. He disliked it for reasons due to his powers. Water extinguishes flames...heheh. Maybe that's why he gets beaten up by him whenever he dumps a bucket of water on his head when they were kids. It was worth it in a way but not the major headaches after.
He looked around to see if there were anyone else around besides the few in the water. He was tempted to join the others, but then he decided not to. For one, he didn't have another change of clothes. And two, he didn't want to catch a cold by walking to his dorm all wet.
He started to look behind him and saw Masashi and another man who looked to be a teacher. What's a teacher doing around the school? He thought all of teachers including the head master left to help outside. Or something like that, no one was told about why they left. He stood up and stretched his arms and yawned. He felt like being a little crazy and jumped into a tree and climbed around above Masashi and the man. He had great strength in his body and balance so he did this with ease. He sat on the limb and held onto it with his legs and fell backwards and hung upside down like he was a monkey. But that was Michio for ya, acting all goofy and crazy. "Hey brother, what are you doing out here?" He grinned and hoped for the love of god that he didn't punch him out of the tree. He then looked over at the teacher in front of him. "What's a teacher doing around here? Weren't you outside helping the others?"

'what the head doesn't know won't hurt her? he supposed that was true enough. but who could say she wouldn't know?
"what the head doesn't know? so you're expecting me not to rat you out then? i'll have to think about that. weigh the pros and cons, ya know?"
he didn't really care if the teacher knew or not. it wouldn't matter either way. if he felt it would be more beneficial to tell the headmistress about this, he would. on the other hand, if he thought keeping it to himself was more beneficial, he'd do just that.
shrugging his shoulders, he put his hand back into his hoodie pocket. did it really matter if roxanne needed him at that particular moment? not to him it didn't. just because he wasn't currently needed, didn't mean something bad couldn't happen that called for his assistance. and if he wasn't there? well, that could spell the death of the rest of the academy staff. maybe not though.
"what makes you think we need you any more than the teachers do? there's a lot more of us and hardly any of us are useless."
it came out a little more harsh than it had sounded in his head but he couldn't say he regretted saying it. besides, it was more of a sarcastic harshness than anything, though it was also true. most of the students were creatures or great power and some were humans with extraordinary gifts. of course, there were a few normal humans running around but they'd be easy enough to protect if it came down to it. what with all the monsters around.
but then, who was to say there weren't enemies among them? students that were on the side of whoever had done something to the barrier? one couldn't hope that wasn't the case but it was still a possibility. and masashi never crossed off a possibility until he could prove it wasn't the cause.
tilting his head to the side at valus' latest question, the teen decided to play dumb. it wasn't really a total act, of course, since he hadn't actually come up with a plan, but he wasn't ignorant of what the man was speaking of.
"game plan? dunno what ya mean there, teach. i was out and about before any of this weird stuff even started."
he paused, straightening up and putting on a curious and interested face. the guy was obviously up to something and, curious by nature, masashi wanted to know what. of course, he didn't expect to get any information without giving up some of his own... but still. one could try.
"so then... do you have some kind of game plan? anything i can help out with?"
and then his brother came swinging down from the tree nearest himself, a bit behind and to his left. he was more than a little tempted to pull his fist from his pocket and let it fly in his brother's direction. but he didn't. instead, he didn't move at all. he kept his gaze on the teacher in front of him, though he did address his brother.
"michio, nice of you to drop in. i was just inquiring about this guys 'game plan'. he seems to think i have one too, though i can't fathom why he'd assume so or why i'd possible have one." [/style]

by rimy ♥ of btn!

Valus loved being questioned more than anything,
"Well, someone needs to make sure the school doesn't go into a total downward spiral."
His own personal mission was greater than the students for the most part, his own powers could be what helps the others in their quest. Even he wasn't put into the whole loop. He trusted the head master but didn't know what she wanted, helping the towns folk and not leaving a few teachers to keep an eye on the students.
It was almost against his own nature that he was following orders of Roxanne.
"Ratting me out won't do much as it is. Roxi didn't bring me here because of my human disguise, my technical experience and my devilishly good looks."
He said with a laugh. He smiled as he started to take a few steps away from them and stopped as the student decided to open his mouth about it what he thought about students needing teachers. He turned his head at the comment.
"Students need teachers more than you think. Most students couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Less a Terror. Do you think that some students could protect the other students that can't fight?"
He couldn't either. But he would try the best he could to do so. No one would harm the students on his watch as he walked onto a bridge and looked at the pond as he put his guitar case beside him and leaned it on the railling as he kept listening. He wasn't too far away that the student would have to yell.
"Well, I see no other students out here, and you seem to want to know why I am here and why the teachers are gone more than anything."
Was Masashi playing Dumb? Or was he trying to push the fact tat Valus was around in the first place in almost direct defiance of Roxanne. He shrugged and looked back at Masashi. Only turning his head to make sure he could see him. This Student was fearless for the most part, he seemed to know his way around a fight, but some become frightened at the sign of danger when it lurks.
"You want to help? Depends on how well you can fight."
He said with a chuckle. He didn't expect Masashi to have a bite, but he sure did have a bark that was good enough to scare most people away. This was a student that may actually have a spirit in him, something that could make him useful to keep the school from going down.
"Oh hey! Brothers!"
He said looking at the two and looked at Masashi and the one hanging. He could barely see the kid since it was dark out and the light didn't catch the face too well, but this would be brothers from what the hanging kid said.
"Whether people like it or not, everyone has a plan, or a game plan as it was. To find an old friend.. Or to find a new one. Or maybe to just find information on something they don't know."
He said with a laugh. He grabbed his guitar case and tossed it into the pond. He watched it fall and land in the water and slowly floating back up.
The sword inside banged around slightly as it hit the bottom of the pond and he turned his full attention to the brothers.
Neither of them knew what was in the case. That was good to know. To them, it could have been a regular guitar. To him. It was something else.
