APPEARANCE: In his human guise, he keeps his hair color, which earns him a couple of looks. He stands at about 6 foot 3 inches and weighs roughly 210 lbs. Most of his body mass is made of muscle, as he tends to workout a bit. His skin tone is somewhat tan, in terms of how pale his family, but outside of those few he is considered to be pretty pale.

His merman form has the same tone and coloring. The only difference being the webbed hands and the fish tail instead of legs and the almost elf-like pointed ears. He sports gills on either side of his rib cage and on both sides of his neck. He also has small fins that protrude from his elbows. His tail is a blue color only a few degrees less intense then his hair color, this color is shared with the fins on his elbow as well.

In both forms he typically keeps his hair tied back, simply because when he has it down he tends to be seen as a girl.

Water As a merman he likes all forms of water, ranging from a cup of water to oceans. He tends to favor clean water but generally speaking, he loves water. He also likes all activities that involve water, such as; surfing, water skiing, swimming, diving, etc.

Books He likes books, what more can be said? Well, he likes books because he likes gathering knowledge. This means that he tends to read whatever he can get his hands (or fins) on. He tends to favor books that are not fiction, although he makes exceptions if they make references to merfolk or some other supernatural being. When he finds a book he likes he can't take his attention away from it unless something he likes more or he feels is more important comes along; class, someone he likes, water related things, etc.

Parties/Social Events He likes being with others, and having fun with others. He doesn't really care what kind of event it is, as long as there are people to hang with and it's not boring. He will even go so far as to cause an uproar if he mistakenly goes to something he considers boring, or having an after-party of some kind to even it all out, plus he would like to avoid trouble.

Music As a merman, he appreciates music, although he tends to favor singing to other forms of making music. This doesn't mean he hates all music that isn't A Cappella. He actually really likes music that gives someone the urge to get up and dance. The only music he doesn't favor is rap, he doesn't consider that music. If a song has even a bit of rap, it annoys him to no end.

Arts He has an odd affinity for art simply because water is involved in so much of it. He likes that water helps create interesting works. The underwater world is so colorful so it's nice to see that water can bring that to the land that seems to drown in just a handle of colors.

Travel Despite loving the oceans and seas and lakes, he actually wants to see everything on land. He is hoping to find something on land that he would consider to be as beautiful, or half as beautiful, as his undersea home. It is also part of his gathering knowledge.

Sea Creatures (Non-Monsters) Growing up, he always liked categorizing the types of creatures he found in his home. This lead to him really enjoying all the mysterious things that were associated with the creatures. There are so many and they can vary so vastly.

Physical Fitness He is a firm believer that you should keep yourself in top form. As such, he loves anything that allows him to put effort into. He likes working out, but not to the level of body-building. He just hopes that toning it up a bit will make him seem less like a girl.


DISLIKES:
Being Seen As Feminine It annoys him to no end when someone comments on how feminine he can appear with his hair down. More than once he has contemplated cutting off his ponytail and burning it but he doesn't like fire enough to do that. Plus he really likes his hair.

Womanizers As a merman, he can manipulate humans into the sea. He is pretty attuned to getting females to follow him. Which makes it very odd that he would dislike womanizers but he doesn't really see how that could be odd. He just thinks a man should stick with one female, a partner for life kind of deal. So men, no matter the species, who go from one woman to the other irritates him.

Rap/Rappers He doesn't think they should qualify themselves as musicians and if he could he would drown them all. As explained above, he doesn't believe rapping is any form of singing. He considers it saying words faster than what is considered normal.

Dry Summers Naturally he would hate the driest part of the year simply because he needs moisture to stay alive. It makes him feel awkward when he starts feeling the moisture leaving the air. It makes him a little irritable but as long as the moisture doesn't fall to dangerously low levels, he will bare with it. It's probably best not to annoy him during this time of year though.

Aimless People He doesn't like people who have no goals they want to accomplish. He terms these people as too lazy or too ignorant of the world to not have thousands of things they want to do. He himself has a lot of things he wants to do, which is why he finds these people inexcusable.

Monsters Who Agree With Class System Personally, he doesn't like the class system, or being termed as "weaker" than those above him in class. He figures they have enough issues to worry about to get caught up in how they differ from each other. They needed to focus more on trying to find a way to live without being killed by humans.

Instigators He doesn't like people who search out for confrontations, though he is happy to respond to such actions. He feels like fighting is a waste of energy when there was so much conflict already going on in the world. He doesn't see a need to add more but he will defend himself and those he cares for.

STRENGTHS:
Siren Call - nicknamed after merfolks water-brethren, this is simply his ability to tempt humans into the sea or to otherwise control their actions. He has used this ability to pull many humans to their deaths, though his band rarely does this without justification. (If it is used for entertainment there is no punishment involved.)
Control of Water - like all merfolk he can control water. His family has a bit of a special subpower though. They can pull water out of the air, though this tends to leave them tired and disoriented. Destan tends to use this to keep himself moist.
Speed - in the water he can swim as fast as a human missile. He can only maintain that speed for a few seconds but more than once it has saved him from being fish food (literally). On land he can run about as fast as a human.

WEAKNESSES:
Fire - As someone who needs water to survive, fire is not a good thing to be around. He tries to stay as far from any form of fire. Simply being near it seems to weaken him a bit. If he stays near it for too long he may even faint or die if he stays exposed to it.
Without Water - He usually keeps a water bottle with him at all times to avoid beginning to dry up. If he goes too long without it would have the same effect as fire would only he would eventually expire.
Electricity - Water is a good conductor of electricity, sadly Destan isn't all water. A shock of electricity is a massive hit that could leave him fried on the ground. The simply static passed between people is enough to make him flinch but isn't going to keep any permanent damage.

SECRETS: His biggest secret is also the most embarrassing event of his life. When he was a boy, around 13, he was still learning how to tempt humans into the ocean. On one occasion he went off by himself to try and tempt a woman into the water. He could find no woman though. Instead he found a solitary man on the beach. Destan planned on just leaving the human be but the human caught sight of him.

When the human saw him he started screaming how he was seeing a beautiful maiden of the sea. Destan screamed back, angered, that he was no maiden but his rage spurred his powers to act on their own. The man heard what he wanted to hear and went into the ocean and drowned trying to reach the beautiful blue-haired maiden of the sea. He hasn't told anyone about it except his closest friend.

OVERALL: Destan is an odd individual, not like he is weird or needs to be put into a cushioned room. More like, his personality is a bit scattered. By scattered what is meant is, he is the intellectual type but he is also the social guy as well. In terms of intellect, he is smart and retains important information but he can be pretty bad with names and specifics when dealing with individuals. He will probably know more about your species than he does you until you become pretty close to him.

He is usually very active. It's very rare that you find him relaxing around. If he is his brain is probably buzzing a mile a minute. He could be pondering a question that's been bothering him or trying to come up with different solutions to some problem or other that he happened to witness.

In term of how he relates to others, he is pretty open and friendly. He can hold up a conversation and is known for putting a joke or two in. Destan doesn't care about species as long as the person isn't full of himself, Destan will be a perfect gentleman.

There are only a few things that would spur him to anger. If he sees someone taking advantage of another he is likely to go in fists flying. As far as he is concerned, taking advantage of a female is the worst offense a man can do. He sees females as incapable of a misdeed. This leads to him getting walked all over by the opposite sex. After a bit of this he has tried to be impartial around new females.

If another of his friends is in a temper, he is known to diffuse the situation by calmly redirecting the friends attention. One such way would be to tap them on the head with a water bottle. He is loyal to a fault, keeping his friends out of trouble if he can but also stepping into their trouble if they need his help. [/size][/ul]

HISTORY: He was born on the coast of Ireland to a somewhat large band of merfolk. Among their band the Glaucus family is the most prominent. Their name comes from the merman of legend who was said to be a normal fisherman who unknowingly ate a magical herb and became the first merman and a god of the sea. It is said the Glaucus family has this blood running through it's veins, that alone gives them high regards. Each generation of Glaucus must put forward a single male heir to carry the blood of the family into the next generation. That male is trained under the guidance of the head of the band, the oldest selected male.

Destan was the chosen male of his generation. As such, he has been pounded with responsibilities and duties. Part of which requires him to have a mate by the time he reaches 18 and at least one offspring. His grandfather, Murrough, was tough on him but he made sure that Destan could hold his own.

After a certain age he was starting to become approached by mermaids, each trying to get a tie into the Glaucus line, plus in terms of looks Destan wasn't all that bad. He didn't really like any of them though he tried to at least find one he could picture spending all his time with.

It was around this time that he met Adalia. He actually had a good time hang out with her, he even ventured on land with her a couple of times. His mother thought that she would be his choice but Destan didn't even tell her about his band's tradition. He was pretty sure that his mermaid friend with a soul more like a blazing fire had a different destiny then being a meek mate.

When he was reached the age of 17 and he still had not chosen a mate, his grandfather stepped in and gave him a choice. He had to let his family choose his bride or he had to go study on land, by joining Akashibai Academy until he was ready to choose a bride. He chose the Academy but his grandfather told him he had until he reached 20 to decide on his mate or he would have to give the position of head of the band to his eldest sister who would marry a merman the family deemed worthy and make him family head.

Destan has been going to school ever since. He isn't actively looking for a mate, instead he focuses on his studies. He has been looking for someone he could marry but he hasn't had much luck yet.[/size][/ul]

RP SAMPLE: Destan strolled through the aisles of books. He ran his pointer finger over the spines of the books at his eye level. He felt the textures of each book and noticed the changes from one to the next. He always enjoyed the feel of books. In the sea he had been born and raised in there was nothing equal to the texture of these small bundles of paper bound by attractive covers.

His brown eyes scanned the titles printed in various fonts down the spines of each, looking for one in particular. His finger and eyes stopped on a single spine. The texture of the book stood fast against the pressure of his touch, as if the book had a personality, a life, of it's own. Destan read the title printed in bold face, "Guide of Seas".

It hadn't been the book he had been hoping for but that was the thing about looking for something. Sometimes when you search for one treasure you find something even more precious than the final product. He gingerly took the book from the shelf, careful not disturb the others. He blinked as he looked over the cover before making a decision and walking away from the bookshelf.

He sat down at a table where his things were already sitting. His bag was on the table and a large water bottle sat beside it. Destan took a swig of the water before sitting in the cushioned chair provided by the library and opening the book he had picked out. It was not what he expected. He had figured the book would just be an encyclopedia of sorts on the species found in the sea but instead it was a collection of tales and legends associated with beings of water.

He wondered if the story of Glaucus was among them. The story was his family's keepsake. This thought made him wonder what his sister was up to. She was probably being molded into a perfect bride for the chance that Destan didn't for fill his duties. Destan shook his head to rid himself of the sigh that threatened to leave his lips. He had never complained with what he had to do and he wasn't going to start now.

To take his mind off these thoughts he returned to the text in front of him. It was then that he heard a racket coming from the entrance. He was pretty sure he knew who it was but he didn't look up to make certain who it was.

When the steps stopped in front of the table where he sat, he didn't even look up. "Hey, how is your day going?" A smile played across his lips as he spoke, not taking his eyes off the text in front of him. [/size][/ul]
