Looking for players
Some of you may, or may not know I am an avid pen and paper game player. With my real life group failing to be reliable I am debating on trying to gather up players over the internet.
Question What is a pen and paper game.
A tabletop role-playing game, pen-and-paper role-playing game, or Table-talk role-playing game is a form of role-playing game (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters' actions through speech.[1] Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization,[1] and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.[2] Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.[2]Taken from wikipedia
Unlike other types of role-playing game, tabletop RPGs are often conducted like radio drama: only the spoken component of a role is acted. This acting is not always literal, and players do not always speak exclusively in-character.[3] Instead, players act out their role by deciding and describing what actions their characters will take within the rules of the game.[3] In most games, a specially designated player called the game master (GM) creates a setting in which each player plays the role of a single character.[2] The GM describes the game world and its inhabitants; the other players describe the intended actions of their characters, and the GM describes the outcomes. Some outcomes are determined by the game system, and some are chosen by the GM.[2]
Question how can we play a table top, pen and paper game over the internet
Simple! we can use skype for our voices and I have an amazing tool called maptools which simulates a table top, that would work wonders for internet play.
Question what is needed to play?
Three simple to install programs all safe and secure I assure you.
Skype is my voice chat program of choice, hamachi is a program that will make it worlds easier to connect to one another, and maptools our table top program. Any books, or resources I can download and send to you as a PDF format. For dice there are many online dice rollers, including one built into the maptools software. Paper for character sheets, this part is up to you, I have seen people use blank paper, print off sheets or use their computer to keep track of things.
Question do I need any prior experience to play?
of course not! players new and old are welcome, all I care about is a willingness to play and have fun as a group. I am more then willing to teach someone how to play the game.
Question when will we play?
That depends on everyone's schedule, I don't expect everyone to to open their life but I would like people to have an open or flexible schedule in order to accommodate everyone.
Question how frequent will we be playing?
Once a week is the standard practice, I may be open to more but that all depends on the group and what they want.
Question who is going to be game master/Dungeon Master
Usually that role is dumped on me, if someone is willing to try I certainly won't complain but I'm posting this assuming that I will be filling that role. I have been running the same group for seven or eight years so I may have some bad habits but if I do I will try my best to resolve them.
What sort of setting/rule set will we be using?
That is up to the DM, but assuming that is me, i will be up for three different game systems players choice and a multiple choice of settings. The story/plot and characters involvement will depend on your choices as players, I run a sand box style game I don't force the players into anything.
- D20 modern: A game style I have played a few times, it's not a bad system. Definitely not my favorite but I would be willing to try it again. I don't have any initial starting ideas like the other two systems but it wouldn't be hard I'm sure.
-A modern setting with an occult/magical backdrop
-A future setting with space travel, ships and giant robots, no magical or fantasy elements though. - Pathfinder: Standard fantasy setting magic wizards elves and dragons all that stuff, if anyone is familiar with Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 it is an updated version with more depth and combat is quicker.
-A game setting based around ADD pyromaniac goblins
your characters will be considered expendable at best, as you loot, sabotage, and pillage near by villages.
-Standard fantasy start off in an open world as up and coming adventurers trying to make your way in the world.
-I won't say much about this third possible setting unless asked specific questions but based around a country filled with a thick fog and demons roaming about stealing the souls of men. It will be a more survival based game in the beginning at least. - Pokemon homebrew, this is the game style I'm currently most interested in personally. Someone passed this system on to me when I was looking for a system for a friend of mine. I read into it and it's quite well made, it's still a work in progress but as far as I can tell it works very well.
-It's pokemon, what more can I say other then..all those times as a kid when you wished pokemon were real and you could do whatever you want? well this is as close as you gonna get. Pokemon can die, pokemon can kill your trainers. You can be your standard trainer, a treasure hunter an explorer whatever you want!
Question how many people can play?
One to four players is what I am looking for, I have a friend on standby who will join if a game is set up. So the party will consist of two or more players. I am fine with one on one games though.
