Only the quiet whispers and almost inaudible giggles of the students disturbed the pristine silence of the room. Most of the people there were studying, but there were some individuals only there to get away from the school outside. Fools, really, trying to run away from classes. The peace and quiet of the library was a welcome sanctuary for most, and was a great place to study, for those interested in doing so. The weather had driven most people inside for the day, the rain falling hard enough to douse any interest in remaining outside. The one exception to that would obviously be any of the water-loving races. The Selkies and the Mermaids, for instance. To most of the other students, the weather was a perfectly acceptable reason to stay inside for most of the day. The only reason that anyone would go outside would be to move between the dorms and classes. It was a quiet day, a soft day. A day when anyone would love to stay inside. Unfortunately, it was also a school day, and that also meant that there were classes, and those classes were mandatory for students and teachers alike. The cold and the wet wasn't the only reason to stay indoors, however. Some students were in the library because it was one of the few places they enjoyed spending their day. Lounging back in an armchair, the youthful-looking redhead flipped the page with one pale finger. The hand rose back to his head, two fingers extending up his cheek, the others supporting his chin. The book was a new one, relatively. It had only come out in the last few years. Most of the older books in the library, Arinbjörn had read ages ago. The style of literature over the years had changed, he had to admit. Not always for the better, or for the worse, but change had occurred. Fluid prose had become less prevalent, replaced by a closer focus on overlying story. The concentration on personal heroism that had been omnipresent in the ancient stories, such as the Odyssey and the Iliad, had softened into a closer look at the human reaction to so many different things. Björn suspected, deep inside, that some of the authors he had read weren't really human, but only pretended to be so that they could bring their stories to the human world. That world was one that was vastly different from the one that the students at the school knew. It was quieter, more innocent. The people of that world could ignore the glaring flaws in their reality. The cracks in the facade that their beliefs held before their eyes. When that belief was broken, when the cracks were revealed, humans often couldn't deal with the shattering of their reality. It was sad, really, but sometimes, people needed their ideas of reality. Even if it was only because that reality was all they had ever known. With a slight frown, he turned to the next page, his hazel eyes flicking down the rows of text. There wasn't much he could do on a day like this. The rain made him feel smaller, doused his spirit. He'd already gone to all of his classes for that day, so until he felt comfortable enough with walking through the rain to get to the dorms. Maybe a few more chapters... [/style] |
