NICKNAMES: Fitch
AGE: twenty-nine
GENDER: male
RACE: Caladrius
CLASS: Defensive Arts
PLAY BY: Shima Kinzou (Ao no Exorcist)[/ul]
I SWEAR TOGETHER WE'VE BEEN
here before but we never looked away
here before but we never looked away
HAIR: blonde
SKIN: fair
BODY: fairly thin, slightly muscular. about 5'10"/178 cm in height.
UNUSUAL: none
OTHER FORM: Caladrius' are pure white birds that are slightly larger than a foot. They have a wingspan of about twenty-four inches and the males have orange beaks and yellow feet. Basil in particular resembles strongly that of a Snowy Egret, but not in every detail.
APPEARANCE: Basil's hair is short, choppy, and blonde (nearly the same gold-ish colour as his eyes)-- tufts of it kept away from his ears with red hair clips. It is usually unkempt, which contrasts against him being a pretty well groomed-bird. It seems he just can't be that much bothered with it in human form. His limbs are long, as he is on the taller side of the spectrum, but his build is meant more for defense than offense- but he is relatively skilled in the latter.
His facial features are sharp and angular, his skin fair but not too pale to be considered abnormal. His human form is about as convincing as it gets, the only thing to be noted is the amount in which his hair sheds and the rate in which it grows back. As a bird, his feathers are constantly moulting and growing back in its place order to keep a shiny, beautiful coat-- his hair mimics this in his human form. This is how his hair stays in good shape despite his apparent lack of brushing it. His fingers are a bit slender, as it is a trait of his species.
His facial expressions are highly indicative of his emotions-- as he is a very expressive being, it isn't too hard to pick up on what he's feeling. His eyes are kind, if not a bit tired looking. His style generally ranges from business-casual to casual, but if the occasion allows for it, he indulges in casual wear as often as possible. He enjoys colours and the mix-matching of them and so may not always have the best sense in fashion, but he finds suits to be boring and ties bothersome but will wear them on school grounds, of course, since there is a time and place for everything.
Although his eyes are gentle, his grin is usually wide and can be a bit cheeky at times or just downright playful. He likes to joke, even with those who don't normally want to be joked with. He has to often remind himself of his limits.
His eyesight is near perfect, but sometimes he'll wear a pair of prescription-less glasses in attempt to make the staff/students take him more seriously in the classroom. He thinks it makes him look more stern.

TWO SEATS INSIDE AN EMPTY ROOM
with one more night what’s left to lose
with one more night what’s left to lose
DISLIKES: hostility, violence, silence, heat, being alone, onions, dull colours, sour foods, germs, snails, bigger bird species (especially scavengers), cats (rather, they're a bit too finicky for him), crying, seeing other people cry/sad, cooking (he's just bad at it)
STRENGTHS: Defensive strategies. Caladrius' are healing songbirds, and thus are particularly skilled in white magic. That includes healing in it's strictest form as well as protection spells, barriers, etc. But they cannot bring people back to life. They can, however, protect their corpses from ghoul-like species who feed on the dead. Some of these spells are in the form of songs, and some of them can only be performed in his bird form. White magic and his innate healing abilities are indeed his strongest assets.
Optimistic, but not to the point of naivety.
Sometimes plays dumb, but this helps him to be overlooked when he's trying to be inconspicuous in what he knows.
Cannot catch human illness-- but can catch illnesses specific to his race.
WEAKNESSES: Physical combat / offense. As a human, he is thin- as a bird, frail. On top of that, white magic pulls a significant amount of strength and energy from him, so doing both simultaneously (at least, to an effective degree) is near impossible. If he fights, he only has enough energy to fight. If he does magic, he only has enough energy for magic. There are few offensive spells in white magic, so he is usually on the defense.
He has a soft spot for the elven species'. Kind of a pushover.
On the flip-side, he is optimistic enough to give everyone a second chance when they probably don't deserve one. He tries to find the good in everyone.
Is a vegetarian. Healthy, but doesn't receive the kind of protein that meat-eaters do that is essential to their muscle strength.
SECRETS: His feathers possess some healing qualities, and so they are a dying race due to being constantly hunted by apothecaries and such for this reason. He seldom reiterates this fact.
Even now, he misses his father. He occasionally contemplates taking vacation to visit, but doubts his will to act on it.
OVERALL: Basil is overall a very gentle soul. He cares too much and probably isn't wary enough. As an innate healer, it runs in his family to help first and ask questions later-- he strongly believes that even enemies don't deserve to suffer as they die. But that being said, he tries not avoid making enemies even if, at some point, it is inevitable.
He's always willing to offer a smile for others on a bad day, and doesn't like to complain about his own (even though it's usually pretty obvious when he's feeling off). He's often a little clumsy, but eager to help and his sympathy is endless. Even if he senses someone may not like him, he tries to the best of his abilities to be cordial, though maybe awkward in doing so.
When confronted or feeling particularly threatened (or even just when a serious event arises), and he is unable to brush it off with a grin or a laugh, Basil has a tendency to close up and fall into an uncharacteristic silence. His speech becomes serious and flat and he avoids eye contact. Even though he may falter a bit under the pressure of an authority figure, when it comes to those he cares about and his students and fellow staff, he stands up for them when needed- always believing in them and wanting to do as much as possible to keep them moving forward. He's very loyal. He's also a pretty good sounding board, when it comes to listening to others problems.
In regards to romance, it makes him nervous. He tries not to subject himself to feeling any sort of romantic emotions for anyone (be it male or female) as his species typically only have one mate in a lifetime-- he fears falling for someone and having it not last or be unrequited. And so for now, he just distances himself when he feels too much of a connection on his end. The problem is, he is a man ruled by his emotions.[/ul]
WE LAY WITH NOT A WORD TO SAY

FATHER: Alfred Finch, fifty-four.
SIBLINGS: 1 brother; Name and status unknown, twenty-nine (fraternal twin)
OTHER PEOPLE: Rupert Finch (Grandfather), eighty-four
HISTORY: Bred from the likes of wealth and poverty, Basil and his brother were the bastard children of a poor maid and a scholar. From the time of they were conceived, their fate had already been sealed by the unfortunate difference in their parents’ status. First rejected by the Finch family, they were to be given away and the mother killed-- but somewhere, they found sympathy and lessened the punishment to mere banishment. The two sons were to then be separated, and never informed of the other parent. This decision was made mostly because of Alfred’s bidding, his father took sympathy and excused them just this once. Adding a son to the lineage was important, but only one was needed, and so the oldest by a mere couple of minutes was taken, and the other given away for the mother to keep.
Basil, stationed with his father, learned from a very young age what it was like to have your life dictated for you. Your choices chosen for you: what you ate, who you saw, what you studied, the friends you made—everything was planned for him by his father and grandfather alike. His father was stern and his grandfather even harsher, but the blonde possessed a heart and temperament like his mother’s and refused to live unhappily in their shadows. Where they prioritized money over pleasure, Basil was the opposite and only wished to live his life for himself as opposed for his family. But not becoming a scholar and eventually, a doctor, in the Finch family was absolutely unheard of, and so the rebellion began.
For his own sake, Basil studied; let himself be tutored by the best of the best to become an expert of his own species and the healing methods they practiced. They taught him white magic, everything they knew so that he could ultimately make them proud—but mostly, make them lots of money. By the time he turned twenty-one, he left. Out of London, out of Europe, with no prior notice to his kin, he left everything behind, took his money and fled. Somewhere along the way, he had hoped to meet the mother he was never allowed to ask about.
Years later, after the working out the hardships of trying to make it on his own, he received his license to teach and became the teacher of Defensive Arts for Akashibai Academy. Somehow, it's the best job he could have asked for.

WITH FACES PRESSED AGAINST THE
wall lets show the world what we are about
wall lets show the world what we are about
RP SAMPLE: ((from a post from a private original rp, hope that's okay))
At the scene, fingers flexed-- eventually balled into fists as dusty boots took him further upon the messy field- past Cyne and into the filth of a possible murder. The stench, the atmosphere, the rotting of flesh and the odd way in which the body began to decompose-- it rendered Schwarz uneasy. It wasn't normal. And even as Yuuichirou kept a calm composure, remaining stern and standing as tall as his Soma blood allowed him- the elder ambassador knew better. He knew that even though he was raised to be tough, apathetic- typical Somanian bodyguard, somewhere in him lie human emotion, and he too was revolted by the scene.
Between himself and Cyne, worst horrors had been witnessed- but none of them could take away how horrendous a fate this was for the once living, breathing creature before them. One step forward resulted in a light 'crunch' beneath his boots, and immediately his focus was redirected.
Spiders.
A bundle of them, trailing from the rotting innards of what was once an innocent tourist from another moon. Where they originated from, he wasn't sure- but he chose not to immediately question it as he took steps backwards, towards fellow ambassador. Until shoulders were brushing, he settled comfortably beside Cyne- deciding it would be best not to tamper before the Alchemist arrived.
'Where are they coming from?' without words, he questioned- it directed to Cyne in reference to the sudden abundance of arachnids surrounding the body. When they were first told of the incident, no mention of any sort of insect was reported- and maybe this was normal, but of the bodies they'd seen in the past, none of them left a swarm of spiders in it's wake.
Shortly after, Solumian Alchemist in the form of a pale, eerie figure arrived- just as Schwarz began to grow impatient. In his eyes carried an unnatural awareness as he scanned over the murderous result of a something unnamed. And as eager as he was to help, he allowed his mind to fall distracted, not needing to be in the same area with Cyne and Schwarz for more than five seconds to notice something off about their chemical structures. It was simple, yet complex and Akira failed to crack it in the time span it usually took for such tasks.
For a long moment, his eyes were glued- interest piqued and he tried for another attempt to pry, only to be interrupted by the particularly looming appearance of protective bodyguard. His expression silently apologized and he walked in the direction of the ambassadors, noticing, but choosing to ignore how Yuuichirou kept close tabs on every muscle he moved. He appeared pleasant before them, slightly deceiving as it may have been- but it was understood that he didn't need to be under oath to do his job. "You don't believe this is a classifiable murder?" Neverminding the foul stench, he stepped up to what was left of flesh and bone, blood and bile, filth and maggots. Bending at the knee, he reached downward to catch a small spider within thumb and forefinger.
"The symptoms aren't of any we've seen before," Schwarz spoke, soft but loud enough as to not direct too much attention to his general direction- maybe then no one would notice the way in which he leaned into Cyne for comfort.
Still crouched, Akira nodded, spider still imprisoned between his fingers.
